Islamabad: The government has proposed Rs500 million for construction of government guest house in Islamabad.
In February this year a summary was sent for approval to the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for construction of new government accommodation to solve the problem of shortage of houses for federal government employees.
An official of Ministry of Housing and Works said, “The government had imposed ban on the construction of new houses for the last 10 years, due to which the ministry is facing shortage of residences”. To a question, he said that more than 3,000 accommodations are in occupation of retired federal government employees or their families.
In Islamabad, 172 government accommodations were vacated from illegal occupants by the enforcement branch of Estate Office under the Accommodation Allocation Rules, 2002. He also said that the matter had also been taken up by the Standing, Committees of National Assembly and Senate on Housing and Works.
He added that it had been recommended that a meeting of all stakeholders including public representatives of areas be convened to discuss different proposals to settle the modalities prior to initiating the survey. He said that both the bodies had recommended that the National Housing Authority may be given task to formulate a policy and to make viable proposals in respect of constructing new flats.
According to budget documents, the guest house is likely to be constructed for the Foreign Affairs Division.
