KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has ordered balloting of housing units in the Turkish Housing Scheme for allotment to flood victims of Thatta and Sujawal.
The housing scheme has 2,120 units, each having two rooms, a kitchen, bathroom, courtyard and veranda. The scheme has also two schools with 32 classrooms. It has a commercial centre comprising 12 shops, three mosques, two community centres, one health centre and a sports complex.
Presiding over a meeting on Monday, the chief minister directed Hyderabad Commissioner Qazi Shahid Parvez, Sindh Disaster Management Authority Director General Salman Shah and others to hand over schools to a well-reputed organisation through education foundations to provide quality education to children of flood victims.
The chief minister was told that water supply and drainage system of the housing scheme had been completed, while electricity meters were yet to be installed.
Under the approved criteria for allotment of a housing unit, an aspirant should be a resident of district Thatta and Sujawal, he or she should fall under ‘national poverty scorecard’, and must not have a shelter provided by any government agency, NGO or INGO. It was decided that shops would be handed over through an open auction.
The chief minister also sought a complete list of flood victims who had already been granted shelter homes by the government, NGO or INGO under various relief or rehabilitation programmes.
There are estimated 36,069 flood victims, including 13,622 of Thatta and 22,447 of Sujawal. However, the Hyderabad commissioner said there were 35, 284 eligible beneficiaries for balloting. Later, the chief minister directed the Hyderabad commissioner to make necessary arrangements for inauguration of balloting.
Separately, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah along with Sindh Inspector General of Police AD Khawaja took an aerial view of the chehlum processions to monitor security arrangements.
The chief minister also visited the Command and Control Centre to monitor movement of chehlum processions and deployment of police force.
